The bananas are yummy when ripe. I can’t wait. They also make great chocolate dipped frozen banana treat rolled in macadamia nuts.
Yup😘
very nice size fruit , the ones i have are lady fingers , it has sentimental value when they ripen our friend used to make rum banana and ice cream and it just stuck plus they are sweet and like the cold but love what you,ve done with your garden , got new flower on the tree now my they have big flowers . terry
Mine is drying can you help me pls
Keep trying
What time is good in South Africa for grafting
Anytime the tree is growing
I am from Nagaland India, what time will be the best for drafting of avocado fruits, since your place and India is quite different in weather so am confused about it
Graft when both scion and rootstock are starting to grow
Hello, I live about two miles from you. I have a Blue Java that's about a year old and maybe 7 ft tall and had 3 big pups and one tiny already. Potted up one of the big ones and leaving two to keep growing.
Excellent!
I grow in a similar climate , now in winter temps have dropped to 35 f and yet my bananas are still ripening on the stems without protection ( a small starchy Asian variety) my cavendish are taking a bit of a beating but will bounce back
Excellent!
25 ft tall? Yup, got those too. They are regular Cavendish and hoping they will flower this year. My dwarf ones are hanging with clusters this year... yea!
Where do you recommend purchasing banana plants from?
I got dwarf Cavendish from Stark Brothers online. 2 years later, both plants have bananas in my 9B area. You have to let them ripen on the plant. I tried forcing a few to ripen, but that did not work. They are seedless like the grocery store but half the length in size..
Have you tried eBay?
Nice 👍
Thanks!
Your bananas look great, Jeff! I love banana plants, I just wished we had warmer temperatures for them in the summer months. So far, only my ornamental Musa basjoo has done well here, but I’ll keep trying with the edible types 🤞
Thanks Peter, ive grown basjoo b4 and didn’t find it any more cold hardy than the ones I currently grow
@@TropicalGardenGuy the main difference I’ve noticed in my climate is that basjoo will grow at lower temperatures than the edible types. I think that is one of the main issues as the other types don’t size up enough to be able to survive the winter. I’ve had multiple varieties in the ground the last few years and they maybe grow 1 foot a year whereas the basjoo can grow 4 or 5 feet in our cooler summers. So I end up having to dig them up and bring them back inside. I did leave one Dwarf Orinoco in the ground one year and wrapped it like I do with the basjoo and it ended up completely freezing and nothing came back in the spring. I will definitely keep trying though. I think once I get them to 5 feet tall I might be able to wrap and insulate them more over winter in the ground.
I keep hearing bananas are easy but I've got a dwarf Orinoco and Namwah that have been stuck in first gear for a couple years. The get regular water and moderate fertilizer. They're heavily mulched and protected on one side by a fence. Mostly full sun in hot S. Arizona. Not sure what more they need at this point. Any thoughts?
Are they tissue cultured?
@@TropicalGardenGuy Not sure. I'll ask the nursery. Is this a common issue with the tissue cultures?
@@TropicalGardenGuy Yes, the shop just confirmed they're tissue cultures. Are these doomed to be runts?
Everything looks great jeff! I'm also surprised that more people don't grow bananas.
👍🌴😎🌴
What do you fertilize it with and how often? I got an ice cream banana pup that sprouted 7 weeks ago after the mother plant died never fruiting or thriving where I originally had it. I'm trying to grow the pup in another part of my yard but am not getting consistent info online about what fertilizer to use. Some way high potassium fertilizer others say the usual balanced 15-15-15 and others a higher nitrogen fertilizer. My pup is about 2ft tall now.
Bananas don’t seem picky about fertilizer, just make sure when applying to keep it away from the trunk
I just posted a banana video too! Two in one day! All good!
lol.. I just saw that. I need to try praying hands
I'm really impressed with the flavor!
I want my banana TV!
@TropicalGardenGuy I will have to get you one!
I had read an article in the WSJ in the early 1990s that the banana plantations were being hit by something like nematodes or a virus and they would have to come up with a new variety as it was impacting the type of bananas we see in the stores. Never heard any update on this.
Yea I remember that

Hi best farm
🌴😎🌴
Good video 😊
Thanks!🌴😎🌴
my cherimoya tree leaves are starting to turn yellow im not sure if it too much fertilizer or too much water
Hmmm hard to say without seeing it’s conditions
hi jeff have you got pacific plantain in your tropical garden of paradise you look rather hot mate bit cold here only 71F to cold for me .terry
No I haven’t tried plantain
I live in San Diego and have tried grafting avocado trees many times. Always in January because that is when budwood is available from OC CRFG scion exchange. The failure rate was 100% though. Seemed like the wrong time to graft when avocado trees were still semi-dormant. I tried grafting in May this year and the graft was successful. The problem is I don't have access to budwood in spring.
Congrats on the success
Certain avocado tree fruit only every other year
Yup
@topicalgardenguy I add fish fertilizer with nitrogen and potassium and phosphorus. Like every two weeks has directed I give them two different types of fertilizer. The brand is Alaska.. one of them doesn’t have nitrogen and the other one has 10 potassium and 10 phosphorus and the other fertilizer has five nitrogen and one phosphorus and one potassium. How often should I water the tree and having the routine of the liquid fertilizer is a good? I live in Southern California and I see that it doesn’t have a lot of fruit like yours
@tooicalfardenguy am I doing it right ? How often should I water ?
How do you know if your graft took and how long does it take for the graft to fuse together
I can usually see leaf pushing in 2 weeks
@@TropicalGardenGuy it’s been well over a month and I see nothing. Should I try to graft it again? I watched another video and they did a side graft instead of top graph. Could that be making a difference? the original plant is still sprouting new leaves, but nothing from the piece that was grafted into the plant. Also, how many graphs can you put on one tree? The plant that I am grafting was planted from seed.
I was wondering if I could get some clippings from the giant Bay Area avocado. I’ll swing by.
lol, I don’t have any… maybe I’ll do a give away next year
@@TropicalGardenGuy well let me know. All I need is one or two clippings.
So far, I only have two types on my tree
Nice video , 🍺👍
🌴😎🌴👍
You must own one🎉
Yup! I love bengals
Your tree is looking great! I wonder if your "Not Del Rey" is the same variety David Johnson sent me last spring with a few others. He only wrote "Tasty" on the bag, so I called it "Sabrosa" (since it's from a Mexican seedling). I grafted it to my multi-variety tree, and the fruit looks very similar to yours. Hopefully it will develop better flavor in Tucson's heat than it did on your tree!
Would you know why my avocado trees have so many dry branches or why do would just dry up? I water it 4 times a week
Hard to say without seeing the tree
I noticed you have bananas at the side there. Have you had any that ever flowered? I've been trying to grow bananas in Modesto for some time now and I can never get them to survive the winter. I did have one survive before but it started to die later on.
I have a bunch of bananas getting ready to harvest
Your video is so helpful ❤ I’m planting my plumeria in a pot right now and it’s summer time. How often should I fertilize the plant?
I fert mine twice a year
Can you please share where we can find bud wood here in the central valley ? I have over 10 seedlings that I would like to graft
Check out crfg San Joaquin valley facebook page
Where do you get your scions? In the central valley as well
Friends
Why would anyone want to graft an avocado? They are so easy to grow from the seed (pip).
Great Video, Jeff ! And not just because we share the same, great first name ! -Jeff.😁👊 Here in the interior Metro Phx Zone 9B, we grow them everywhere ! I currently have 2 mango trees...once had a few more. They need protection for the 1st 2-3 winters & summers--then often do much better thereafter.
Excellent 👍
Did he protect it from the frost?
Planted close to house
How/Where do You get adult cuttings from Avacados to graft to Your tree?
Friends. But you can buy online from eBay and Etsy
What advacado tree do you think does best in high temperatures Thanks
All seem fine in my heat though if I were to pick one I’d say mexicola
When is harvest season for your Carmen Hass? This is the first year mine has fruit on it and I want to know when to pick it.
Not sure… guessing early next summer. This my first year too
thanks for posting.
Very welcome!
Jeff, do you know what rootstock your tree is? I’m in the foothills above Roseville and we get similar temps.
The rootstock is Mexicola grande
Very cool Jeff , glad to see you have some monster fruit set I hope at least 1 can make it to 3 pound size, good call in grafting on lamb excellent choice, sorry queen turned out to be a dud and non - del ray, my sister still has a normal del ray it's a full Mexican.
Since I dont have any idea how cold hardy the tree is, I figuired it may be less hardy than Hass, so I grafted monster so that its surrounded by more hardy varieties
@@TropicalGardenGuy it's not very cold hardy I would place it worse than Hass likey close to reed, your yard warmer than me I think it would handle your yard better than in country. I would not be too fearful of cold damage grafted up higher on tree.
@@TropicalGardenGuy Did your neibor get any fruit set of Gigante this spring ? Gigante as you know takes a long time to mature but the fruit is so large it's worth the wait, someone told me I should grow Marcus Pumpkin as it takes cold better than Gigante.
That's looking very promising Jeff, hope the extreme heat doesn't mess things up. I did lose my grafted Mexicola Grande very frustratingly. Video posted today on the sad remains lol. Can't win them all I guess
In my garden it seems that my trees… all of them do fine up till 108f. The key is to have great drainage and good irrigation schedule . So many people start out in the beginning by shading the tree… Which trains them to need shade rather than deal with the sun. I try to explain that to the “ Experts “ they still shade their trees
I just drove through Modesto yesterday coming from Folsom going back home to Long Beach. Man, it was HOT in the central valley! It was a nice drive though. I like the central valley. Stay cool.
Yea, it’s crazy hot here. Will be same weather untill about the middle of October
When weather permits, would you sell scions?
Sorry i dont sell stuff , but check out my 2nd channel “ Modesto Jeff “ I plan on doing some giveaways
Can’t wait to start eating those avocados.
😘
Thanks for sharing your fruit set.
Welcome Greg
Have you ever discussed how you prune a multi-grafted tree?
Good idea
Hope you keep us up-to-date on how this fruit progresses.
I sure will
